F-commerce vs ecommerce website: what Facebook sellers should know

F-commerce Bangladesh sellers ask if they need a website. Here is what a Facebook page does well, where it breaks, and how to add a store without leaving chat.

F-commerce vs ecommerce website: what Facebook sellers should know

F-commerce in Bangladesh means selling through Facebook: a page, posts, Messenger, and a lot of "price?" comments. For many sellers it is how the business started, and it still works.

The question is not "should I quit Facebook?" It is "what should live on Facebook, and what should live on a site I control?" This post gives a plain answer.

What F-commerce in Bangladesh does well

Be fair to it. A Facebook page does real work.

A seller wrapping a product in tissue paper next to a phone showing a chat conversation

  • Finding people. Your buyers are already there. Ads and posts reach them.
  • Starting fast. You can open a page today and sell by tonight.
  • Trust through conversation. People ask questions, you reply, they feel safe.
  • No setup cost. The tools are free.

If you are testing a product, a page is the right place to start. Do not build a website before you know anyone wants what you sell.

Where F-commerce starts to hurt

The problems show up when orders grow.

Stock lives in your head

You remember you had four. Three chats closed. Someone promised the same item twice. The record you need is spread across threads. We wrote about this in stop running stock from a Messenger thread.

Orders are messages, not records

An order is a name, a phone number, an address, items, and an amount. In Messenger, it is a paragraph you copy into a courier panel. Mistakes follow.

You rent the audience

Reach can drop. A page can be restricted. A layout can change. The catalog you spent years posting is not a site you own. A page address is Meta's address, not yours. See a Facebook bio is not a domain.

Customers cannot browse

Someone who wants to see your full range has to scroll old posts. A store lets them filter by category, check sizes, and see the price without messaging you.

No reliable history

When a customer says "I never got it", you need to find the order. Searching old threads at 11pm is slow.

What an ecommerce website adds

A real store does not replace chat. It gives the chat something to point at.

  • A catalog with photos, prices, and variants.
  • Stock that updates when an order is placed.
  • A checkout that records the name, phone, address, and payment method.
  • An order list you can search.
  • Courier booking from the order.
  • A link you can put in every ad, bio, and message.
  • Reports, so you can see which products sell.

Ecommerce website does not mean fancy design. It means a record.

Most successful sellers use both columns. Facebook finds the buyer. The store handles the order.

What not to do

Do not announce "we are leaving Facebook". Buyers will still message you. Most Bangladesh customers still want to ask a question first, and many want COD so they can inspect the parcel. We covered why in keep WhatsApp, put the catalog on a site.

Do not move everything in one day. Move your best-selling products first.

Do not skip testing. Order from your own store once before sending customers there.

How to add a store next to your page

Here is a simple plan. Most sellers can do it in a weekend. For a longer version, read moving a Facebook shop to a real store.

  1. List your top 20 products. The ones that already sell.
  2. Collect photos and descriptions. Pull them from old posts.
  3. Count stock. Count the shelf, not the last comment.
  4. Create a store. On StoreOS you sign up with a Bangladeshi mobile number and an SMS code. Free gives you a website builder, up to 50 products, and 1 staff.
  5. Add products with sizes and quantities.
  6. Set delivery charges for inside Dhaka and outside Dhaka.
  7. Upgrade when you take your first real order. COD, Pathao, and Steadfast need a paid plan. Silver is Tk 499 a month, with a 7-day trial. See pricing.
  8. Place a test order. Check the order list, delivery charge, and total.
  9. Put the link in your page bio and pinned post.
  10. Reply to "M ache?" with the product link.

After a few weeks, you will notice fewer "is it available?" messages. The page answers them.

What changes in your day

Before: you read chats, copy addresses, update a spreadsheet, and hope it is right.

After: customers place the order on the site. It lands in the order list. You confirm by phone or WhatsApp if needed, book Pathao or Steadfast, and the stock goes down on its own.

You still talk to customers. You just stop being the database.

When you do not need a store yet

Be honest with yourself.

  • You sell fewer than a handful of orders a week.
  • Your product is one-off and unique each time.
  • You are still deciding what to sell.

In that case, a page and a notes app can be enough. Revisit when you start double-selling items or losing track of orders.

FAQ

What is f-commerce in Bangladesh?

F-commerce is selling products through Facebook: pages, groups, posts, and Messenger. Buyers usually order by message and pay by cash on delivery or mobile wallet.

Is f-commerce better than an ecommerce website?

Neither wins alone. Facebook is good at finding buyers. A website is good at holding stock, orders, and history. Most sellers use both.

Do I need to stop using Facebook if I open a website?

No. Keep the page for reach and conversation. Put the store link in your bio and posts so the website handles the order.

Can I run a store for free?

You can create a free StoreOS store, load your catalog, and use the website builder. Free does not take COD orders or book couriers. Paid plans do.

What to do this week

  1. Write down how many orders you took in chat last week and how many mistakes there were.
  2. Pick your top 20 products.
  3. Create a free store and load them with stock counts.
  4. Share one product link instead of a screenshot.

Create a free store and keep Facebook for what it does best.
